Grotte de Labeil

Archaeological evidence indicates that the cave was inhabited as early as the Neolithic period (around 6000 years ago) and the Bronze Age. Excavations in the 1960s revealed significant artifacts, including:

  • Burial sites with human remains
  • Everyday objects such as pottery, jewelry (parures), and ceramics.
  • Bronze tools and ornaments.
  • These findings suggest the cave served as a shelter and ritual site for prehistoric communities, leveraging its strategic location and water source

Fun Fact

The entrance of Grotte de Labeil was historically repurposed as a cheese cellar for maturing Roquefort cheese. The cave’s stable temperature (a constant 12°C) and humidity created ideal conditions for the fermentation process. This quirky agricultural use continued until the cave was developed for tourism.
