Ancient and Medieval Origins
Prehistoric and Roman Activity:
Quarante is believed to have been installed on a Roman oppidum (a fortified settlement), indicating significant occupation during the Gallo-Roman era. Artifacts from this period have been discovered and are displayed in the local museum, showcasing the area's early historical importance
Medieval Development and Abbey
The village is a hilltop medieval settlement, with origins tracing back to at least the 10th century. The Sainte-Marie de Quarante Abbey, built in 902, is a central historical landmark. This abbey is one of the first Romanesque structures in the Languedoc region, consecrated in 1053, and is an early example of Lombard Romanesque architecture. It features austere interior design with pure Romanesque lines, barrel vaults, and minimal sculptural decoration.
The medieval village retains original structures from the 12th to 14th centuries, including rempart walls, towers, and a prison, visible along streets like Rue des Remparts and Rue des Bichettes
The name "Quarante" is derived from its Occitan name, "Cranta." The etymology is not entirely clear, but it may have historical roots linked to the Roman era or early medieval periods
